Curating a Collection with Ficks Reed Rattan Furniture

For several months we have been working on a very special project. Now that our vision is finally coming to fruition we are very excited to show you a behind the scenes look at the process of our exclusive sale available now on One Kings Lane.

[Update: now that the sale is over you can shop these items here.]

We were lucky to get our hands on dozens of raw Ficks Reed furniture frames. Ficks Reed is world renowned for it’s high-end rattan furniture. A fixture in homes and highly coveted by designers throughout the 60’s and 70’s , the furniture company was recently making a comeback before it went out of business just a few years ago. The frames we acquired are the very last pieces of Ficks Reed furniture … ever!

Raw Collage

Just a few of the many raw Ficks Reed frames.

Our next step was to develop the overall look of the collection. We drew inspiration from all around but have mainly focused on a mix between Palm Beach, Hollywood Regency and Chinoiserie. These styles meld well with the design of the frames and our color palette.

Our colors, carefully selected and tweaked over the years.

Designer fabric, only a few of these made the cut!

The next step was to have everything lacquered and upholstered. Our team of artisans have been working hard to create the perfect pieces for our collection. We cannot stress enough the importance in the quality of materials and work it takes to make one-of-a-kind pieces that will last generations. Our lacquers and fabric, even the foam are sourced from some of the best suppliers. Ensuring our furniture is comfortable, sturdy and chic!

(Side note: never be stingy with foam … your tush will thank you.)

A few pieces just back from the painters!

After the piece is complete they are ready to be photographed for the sale on One Kings Lane. Finishing touches are added and no detail is over looked in the process. From cleaning glass table tops to fluffing cushions each piece of furniture is carefully inspected and positioned for its picture. Since the sale is online these photos are very important for customers looking to purchase these one-of-a-kind pieces.

A newly lacquered table is ready for its big moment.

Before and after

Doing a room photo shoot allows us to showcase the entire collection. It gives customers inspiration on how our unique pieces can be used throughout their homes. It is also a chance to show lighting, art and decorative accessories that will pair well with the Ficks Reed furniture. We spent the entire day coming up with several different setups. From living room to dining room and even an alcove there is no limit to how you can use our high end pieces.

  1. I have a Ficks Reed swivel rocker. It looks like it has never been used..maybe sat in a corner for years for decor? The cushions show no wear at all and everything looks original to me. I was looking for a sewing chair and came across it at a second hand store for $8 …..!!!!! …didnt know what I had, but after sitting in it for about two seconds….I knew it was perfect and bought it. At home, I lifted up the seat cushion and saw the label. It sounded vaguely familiar so I googled it. I almost had a heart attack! I have one very inexpensive expensive and comfy sewing chair! I’m a very happy camper!

  2. Joady Cicero says:

I have a set of Ficks Reed rattan furniture, loveseat , sofa, chair and ottoman a square glass top coffee table and end table and a rectangular glass end table….. I bought it in 1989. Unfortunately a puppy chewed the windings off some pieces. The color is a natural finish. Can I buy a spool of the rattan windings to repair the pieces damaged?

  3. June Caputo says:

Do you refurbish or repair Ficks Reed chairs?

  4. I have Ficks Reed cane furniture that I love, but the cushions need replacing. Is this something your offer. I have 2 single chairs and a loveseat with a total of 8 cushions.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
