SWI Goes to the Movies

Every year, on the first Tuesday of May, we love following the Met Gala. As we scroll through pictures of celebrities in their couture gowns we always wonder what the party is like beyond the red carpet. Now we have all the answers!

The 2016 documentary “The First Monday in May” provides an inside look to not only the planning of the Gala, but the preparation of the exhibit at the center of the celebration. It details the process of piecing together the Costume Institute’s largest exhibit in its history: China: Through the Looking Glass. We loved this theme in particular because Chinoiserie is a huge part of our design style.

The exhibit is incredibly spectacular. It combines pieces from the permanent collections at the Met, such as traditional Chinese clothing, and pieces from the Costume Institute. The clothing is sourced from Hollywood costumes of the 1930s and modern runways of designers like John Galliano and Alexander McQueen.

As we witness the exhibit come together, we are reminded not just of the beauty of the clothing, but the importance of the displays themselves. The curators are choosing to direct how we will see the clothing and connect it to Chinese history. Our absolute favorite display connects blue and white ginger jars to ball gowns inspired by their color and shape. We are obsessed with the blue and white mermaid dress below! Who wouldn’t want to kick back in that with a cocktail in one of our beautiful interiors?

Apart from the behind the scenes of the exhibit, we get to go into Vogue’s offices and see the planning behind fashion’s biggest event. It is delightful to see that even the great Anna Wintour spends time on seating charts and flower arrangements. To be fair to Anna, her seating chart is made up of famous celebrities including Beyoncé and Kanye West.

The movie is full of celebrity cameos and beautiful fashion. If you’re looking for a movie to watch this weekend or need a dose of glamour in your life, look no further than The First Monday in May, available on Netflix.
